Aren't they just adorable?!? Moriah is really into dancing so we thought it fitting that she go as a ballerina. She loves watching So You Think You Can Dance with us. Levi was a penguin and he liked being dressed up. He laughed when he got his costume on.
We were at a loss of what to do with the kids this year. Moriah is in a scared-of-anything-dressed-up stage so the thought of having our doorbell ringing all night with scary dressed up kids sounded like major trauma for her. We knew we wanted to take them somewhere, that way we could leave if she got too scared. We decided that the mall was a good option. They had a store to store trick or treat happening. It was for 12 and under, so we thought there wouldn't be very many scary costumes. We arrived 5 minutes after it started and it was a madhouse! There was barely anywhere to walk. Almost as soon as we walked in, a kid in the grim reaper get-up (with a special mask that had blood running down it) got right in Moriah's face trying to scare her. I was so proud of her. Her eyes got big and she looked petrified but she didn't cry. We talked about how it was just a boy pretending. She seemed to get it.
A lot of the stores were already out of candy and it was so crowded that we went to two stores and left to go to dinner at Cheeburger, Cheeburger with some friends. What an ordeal!
I am not sure what we will do about next year. Any creative ideas anyone? I want them to be able to dress up and have fun but I really don't like the scary costumes. Maybe we will just have a party at our house each year with costumes, candy and a movie night. Things to think on...

They look adorable! Having the party at home is a good idea! I agree, I want my (future) children to be able to participate, but I do not want it to be about the scary, gory stuff.
ReplyDeleteElla was terrified last year and didn't enjoy trick-or-treating at all. This year I was kind of worried about Hannah for the same reasons. We went trick-or-treating in Michelle's neighborhood and it was dark enough that the girls didn't see many other costumes. And the ones they did see they were much braver about, even going up to doors by themselves. Maybe Moriah will be so grown up and mature next year she will surprise you :-)
ReplyDeletewe went to a farm this year during the day and that was super fun. had it not rained, we would have repeated last year's trip to a loca church's harvest festival. they did games, candy, food and music and all of the costumes were way kid friendly. it was geared towards the community so you didn't feel weird not going to the church. lexi had so much more fun playing games and hanging out while getting candy than she would have had running from door to door. (besides, it was much more family oriented too).
